Cu Chi Tunnels 1 day tour experience from A to Z 2019

Cu Chi tunnels is a mass network of connecting tunnels located 70 km in the North West of Ho Chi Minh city. This system of deeply underground tunnels have several floors and alleys and stretches more than 250 km long into the Cambodia border.

Viet Cong soldiers used the tunnels as the base of operations during the fight for independence against the French colonists in the 1940s. Then they developed to fight Americans during the Vietnam War (or Vietnamese call it the American War). It became a complex that served as living quarters, communication and supply systems, hospitals and food and weapon caches.

This is the vehicle most tourists choose to move to Cu Chi Tunnels from the center of Saigon. You can catch this bus at Ben Thanh bus station. Bus tickets are very cheap at only 0,5$

a.- Go to Ben Duoc Tunnels: You take bus number 13 (Ben Thanh - Cu Chi) or 94 (Cho Lon - Cu Chi) to get to Cu Chi bus station, then from here hop on bus number 79 (Cu Chi - Dau Tieng) to Ben Duoc Tunnels.

Follow the direction of An Suong overpass - Highway 22 is okay. However, the way is very long and complicated, if you are here for the first time, you should not choose this option. Or if you choose, there should be people in the path guide.

According to my experience of visiting Cu Chi Tunnels, buses are still the most convenient, economical, safe of transportation. But this option has a disadvantage that you will miss many beautiful scenes and interesting experiences along the way.

2.Place of residence in Cu Chi Tunnels

Most tourists only spend 1 day to visit Cu Chi Tunnels, but if you want to stay overnight, there are still motels for you, room rates range from 150,000 - 300,000 VND / room / night with full convenient. According to experience of visiting Cu Chi Tunnels, this is a relatively reasonable room rate in the resort.

3.Into Cu Chi Tunnels

When walking towards the tunnel site, you will pass through a ticketing booth and need to buy two tickets from the counter.

The first ticket is 70,000 Dong for entrance fee and another is 20,000 Dong for the guide. It is compulsory to purchase both tickets because you will need a guide to take you through.

The holes dug up involved a three-person job- first person will dig, another will pass and last person will dispense the sand. I can’t imagine how this Viet Cong soldiers and its civilians lived beneath here for months. This is only the first floor below the surface and can feel stuffy and hot just within few minutes.

The most interesting thing when discovering Cu Chi Tunnels is that you will be eating sweet potatoes, cassava and sesame bulbs with peanut and sesame salt in the Hoang Cam kitchen area after going through the tunnel.

Cassava is what the people ate every day during the war to survive underground with limited food supplies.

Travel tips:

  1. To make the trip on my own by public buses, you will have more flexibility and no mandatory stops by tour operators.
  2. If you have very limited time, the best way is to choose a trip to the tunnel in one day. There are many Cu Chi Tunnels tour offer Half Day Tour in vinadaygoreise Cu Chi Tunnels .
  3. Take insect repellent. Remember, this is a jungle and there were many mosquitos around.
  4. Go early in the morning to avoid the hot weather and the crowd in Cu Chi tunnels.
  5. Bring lots of water to keep hydrate because it is hot and humid. You can also buy water at the cafe on the way.
